Want to be part of one of Sydney Uni’s largest and most active musical societies? SUSO is full of students who love classical music and share their passion at university. Membership is open to all orchestral instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe/cor anglais, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion and harp.
SUSO’s main auditions are held for the start of each semester (late February and late July). To organise an audition follow the link below. We also run auditions during the year as needed, so we’re keen to hear from interested musicians any time. We currently have vacancies in particular for: double bass, percussion and horn.
The audition will have:
If you have any questions you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Each O-Week you can also visit our stall on the Front Lawns. Please note that as SUSO is part of the USU’s Clubs & Societies Programme, all members need to be current ACCESS card holders This is not required for auditioning however.
For those of you who have recently finished high school and are concerned that your musical standard has slipped during the post-HSC break, please be assured that other people are also in the same situation, and that we take this into consideration.
SUSO rehearsals are held on Mondays, 5.45–8.45pm during semester. Rehearsals are also occasionally scheduled on other days including the weekend leading up to concerts.
Joining SUSO involves a commitment to attend rehearsal every week, but anyone interested who has a clash on Mondays can still contact us to discuss possible options.
One of our regular social events is a weekly barbeque before rehearsal, held at 5pm each Monday and free for members. This is a great way to meet other members of the orchestra and also not starve during rehearsal!
Our home for all auditions and rehearsals is the Old Darlington School. It’s on the Darlington side of main campus (the Redfern side of City Road) and it’s the small brick building in the centre of the lawns, opposite the engineering buildings.
